Chickaloon Greenhouse

Chickaloon Village’s Four-Season, Ecologically Designed, Renewably Powered Greenhouse was awarded $25,000.00 on April 7th 2006 in the Alaska Marketplace Competition. Competing alongside 42 other Rural Alaskans for a share of $200,000.00 Kim Sollien our Sustainable Foods Coordinator, gave her 5 minute pitch to the Judges on how our greenhouse project is innovative, profitable, sustainable, and how it will increase skills and create jobs in our community. Judges from all over the country came to evaluate the Alaskan entrepreneurs and vote on which projects to award. So many worthy projects competed for a share of the pie, British Petroleum decided to offer up another $300,000.00 to the marketplace allowing 21 projects to be funded with seed money.

Now with start-up capital from Alaska Marketplace www.alaskamarketplace.org, once in full operation, the greenhouse will serve as a model four-season herb, vegetable, berry and flower production facility, powered by the wind and sun, and heated with sustainably harvested wood. We anticipate the Greenhouse operating 9 months out of the year producing a variety of crops for market. Our mission for the greenhouse is to become a profitable business while providing opportunities for communities to re-assert Food Sovereignty by offering gardening services, bedding plants, seasonal fruits and vegetables and educational programs.

Please stop by as the 2006 season progresses to see what lovely edibles we have for sale.
