Watershed Quality Report

The Matanuska River watershed encompasses 2070 sq. miles within the Cook Inlet drainage basin in Southcenteral Alaska. The largest tributaries in our watershed on the north side are Moose Creek, Eska Creek, Granite Creek, Boulder Creek, Kings River, and Chickaloon River. To the naked eye this watershed would seem pristine. However traditional knowledge tells us that the salmon population has declined and almost disappeared in some streams. The impacts of logging, coal mining, coal bed methane drilling, road building, and growing population threaten our watershed’s health.

CVEPP is working to protect and restore the Matanuska River watershed by documenting traditional knowledge about the watershed and its traditional uses, conducting water quality sampling within the watershed, developing tribal water quality and other environmental ordinances, and mapping important watershed features, including salmon spawning habitat. We are also conducting salmon population surveys and restoring damaged salmon habitat including relic channel reconstruction.
