TEN THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR THE WATER
Join the efforts to persuade the state to adequately protect our water resources from degradation due to coal bed methane development. CBM operations can pump 12,000 gallons or more of water per day out of one well, and we may have thousands of these wells in the Valley if some limits are not put in place. Unregulated, this industry could turn our beautiful Valley into an industrial sacrifice area.
Find out what other things are going on in your community that might affect the water. Be a warrior and give the water a voice. Also, remember that wetlands help filter and protect the water, so give them a voice too!
Make a statement with your dollars. When you are shopping, read the labels of all products that you buy and purchase products without hazardous ingredients.
Don’t be a lawnie lou, let nature take it’s course in your front yard. Refuse to use herbicides or pesticides on your property.
Phosphates are algae food! Protect water quality by using low phosphate or phosphate free detergents.
Dispose of hazardous materials and used oil properly. The Borough Landfill conducts household hazardous waste collection days on the last Saturday of every month from 9:30 4:00 pm.
Take good care of your septic system and remember that it is created only to treat poo. Anything else you put down the drain will ultimately end up in your groundwater. Get your system pumped regularly.
If you live next a lake or river, leave a healthy buffer of natural vegetation between cleared land and the water.
Install low-flow appliances in your home that use less water.
Pass it on! Talk to others about how to care for the water.
