CHICKALOON VILLAGE FAMILY HOUSING

Working to Build a Stronger Community

Changing Houses Into Homes

HISTORY- Chickaloon Village families have lived with inadequate and substandard housing for many years, usually due to a subsistence lifestyle with minimal income.  Some families had no water or sewer, while others lived in small, outdated buildings with little to no insulation.

When a poll was taken among the village members to determine what services Chickaloon Village should provide to its membership, adequate housing was always on the list.  In 1998, Chickaloon Village took the first steps when applying for, and was awarded its first grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA).  This first housing grant was a renewable one covering a five-year period (1998-2002).

During this five-year period, houses were rehabilitated and weatherized, for qualifying Village members, and other Alaska Natives.  Emergency repairs were also undertaken on an as-needed basis.  The Family Housing Department has also built two new three-bedroom rental family homes from the foundation up.  The old Council Building at the end of All Elks Road, which is now our new Housing Community, was rehabilitated into a three-bedroom transitional family home.  Our Health Building/Clinic was reconstructed and the Downtown Gravel Building was also renovated to house the Environmental, Housing, and Peace Officer Departments.

The current five-year (2003-2007) plan is to continue to develop rental family homes for Low-Income Alaska Native/American Indians.  In 2003, the Family Housing Department constructed a Multi-Family Dwelling (Duplex) for small families, and/or elder housing, as each unit has only two-bedrooms.  Future plans are to build another Multi-Family Dwelling in 2005 with combined 2004 & 2005 funding.

To qualify for Low-Income Family Rental Housing, applicants must be Low-Income Alaska Native and/or American Indian.  A completed application is required and must be received by the Family Housing Department for review.
