Matanuska River Salmon Spawning Distribution Research

In conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, this project aims to document the extent and location of salmon spawning in the Matanuska Watershed. Through this research adult salmon will be captured using fishwheels and radio tagged to follow their migration to spawning locations.

Matanuska River Side-Channel and Salmon Habitat Research In conjunction with the U.S. Geologic Survey, this project aims to determine the formative process, viability and importance of clear water side-channel habitat in the Matanuska River. Specific objectives are to: (1) evaluate the quantity and persistence of side channels in the river through time, (2) determine the quality of habitat within these side channels and (3 evaluate fish usage by species, age, and seasonality.
